Main Attractions

Porvenir has a beautiful waterfront, on whose banks you can see pink flamingos and black-necked swans, which include quaint old houses.It also has the  Memorial Park, with machinery once used by pioneers of this region, the Yugoslav Park and the Monument to the Pioneer. The coast then turns south around the bay to the Miradorr, where you can see the whole city.

It highlights the Provincial Museum Fernando Cordero Rusque, created in 1980, that displays a photo exhibition of archaeological remains and selk’nam (extinct aborigines of the island.) It also has information about the discovery and exploitation of gold that started in 1881, along with a remarkable collection of altarpieces of the most remarkable houses of Tierra del Fuego, and a section of natural history, archeology and ethnography.

 

SURROUNDINGS
Baquedano mountain range:
It is located 50 kilometers south of Porvenir and has the most spectacular view of the Strait of Magellan. You can visit a gold mining area where pirquineros (people that extract gold) perform the task with a large metal plate on the river, as in Western movies.

On its way there is the Laguna Santa Maria, where it is possible to see black and white necked swans, coots and flamingos among other birds.

 

Onasin:
It is an old farm founded in 1833 by the Sociedad Explotadora de Tierra del Fuego, a giant consortium that made sheep business until the mid-twentieth century.There are notable period buildings and cemeteries for the settlers of  Onaisín and San Sebastian, both National Monuments. It isan excellent place for photographs.

 

Laguna Verde:
One can see the characteristic color of its waters that give its name and along with some birds that are typical of the area. This place is 20 kilometers from Porvenir way to the airport.

 

Lago Blanco
With a great view of the Cordillera Darwin and Victoria Island in the middle of the water, White Lake is a great destination for fly fishing in Tierra del Fuego. There are beavers, the Great Plague of Patagonia, which have brought down huge areas of forest in order to make their homes. You can take full panoramic pictures in Lago Blanco once you ascend the Cuchilla  hill 800 meters up, that takes 8 hours by walking back and forth. It is a must in the area. You have to bring your own supplies and fuel. It is located 210 kilometers southwest of Porvenir.

 

Karukinka Park
Karukinka means “our land” in Selknam language. It is a model area of conservation. It has 270 000 hectares of forests that were saved from being turned into chips and now have a Public Use Plan that aims to open the park, allowing the development of management activities, education, research and conservation tourism . You can visit the area of ​​Lago Escondido,part of  Karukinka, which is the origin of the most important watercourse of Tierra del Fuego: Rio Grande.

 

Lago Fagnano
It has only one end in Chilean territory, the rest is part of Argentina. The carretera austral (southern road)  ends at this point. From that point there is a path leading to Almirantazgo sound, a place where get there some remains of the Marinelli glacier.
